September 10, 2017 brought devastating changes to our Island Paradise when Hurricane Irma came roaring ashore. Like most of our neighbors, we suffered damage to our buildings but God is faithful! Hundreds of our Christian brothers and sisters from a dozen states sent the funds needed for us to rebuild and repair.
Volunteers came from near and far, sleeping in their cars, tents or on the floor to help us with removing storm debris and gutting the inside of our main building where we had lost our roof.
Minister Tim Thompson contacted the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc in Nashville, Tennessee (www.disasterreliefeffort.org) and offered our building as a distribution center. The first trucks of food, water, cleaning supplies, baby boxes, blankets, etc. arrived soon after residents were allowed back in to the Keys.
As the recovery continued, we met with hundreds of families trying to put their lives back together. Disaster Relief Effort provided new mattresses, furniture and appliances to help families in the middle and lower keys and neighboring islands get back on their feet. By August of 2018, the retail value of Disaster Relief items supplied to Keys residents reached $1.7 million dollars.
Beyond the blessings of helping families recover, are the lasting friendships we have enjoyed with all the volunteers who came to help.
